Last year in 7th grade, Josh struggled. Up to this point he had always been a bright, eager student but now he hated his teachers, argued with his parents, his grades had dropped dramatically…and worst of all, he was being viewed as a troublemaker at school. His parents took privileges away but this only made things worse. Over the summer they contacted LearningWisely with these questions: What could be behind this downturn that is so unlike him? Should we pull him out of his school and look for one with more discipline? A strength based assessment shed light on the underlying issues. Although Josh had always been a good reader, he was given an oral reading test starting with what should have been an easy read for him below his grade level. When he was asked basic comprehension questions about the story he had just read aloud, he was unable to answer any of the questions correctly. On the next passage, a longer one that included more challenging vocabulary, he answered every question correctly. A similar pattern of missing easier items while acing harder ones was seen on tests for math and grammar usage. Josh wrote illegibly, making 6’s look like 0’s and handwritten spelling unreadable. Josh was being told to try harder but he knew he was already trying and this was frustrating to him. His frustration turned to anger and giving up. LearningWisely provided educational therapy for him over the summer, attended a Student Study Team meeting when school started and shared his learning profile there. The school had been insisting that he drop to a lower level in math but scores on his math testing over the summer did not support this. The school allowed him a month to see if he could handle Algebra 1 with accommodations. Josh is now doing quite well-he stayed in Algebra 1 and uses bypass strategies to manage his illegible writing and inconsistent focus reinforced in his LearningWisely Educational Therapy one day a week after school.
